Today the most widespread solution is the identification with password or card. The "nightmare" of the system administrators is known for everybody, the yellow Post-it with login names and passwords stuck to the display. There is no effective protection against giving the card to somebody else. One of the capable solutions is the fingerprint based biometrical system against forgotten passwords, logins with somebody else's password or card. (According to independent analysts, 25-50% of the Help-desk calls come form forgotten passwords.
As the fingerprint is unique this really identifies its owner. Distribution of the appropriate entitlements is made by the system. The security is increased, in one solution the sample of the fingerprint is stored on a chip card, so for the login both, the persons finger and the card are needed. In other solution the digital pattern of the fingerprint is stored in the system. The fingerprint reader measures the capacity between its surface and the finger, so it can not be fooled.
